How Do Car Batteries Work?

A battery is what provides the electricity needed to power the electrical system in your vehicle. The battery converts chemical energy into electrical energy which is usable by a car and delivers voltage to the starter. Additionally, the battery acts as a stabilizer which keeps the voltage steady and keeps the engine running.

How Do I Know When My Car Battery Is Running Out Of Juice?

A few warning signs that your car battery is at the end of its life can be found below:

  1. Your vehicle is taking longer to start, it might be making a whirring sound that you haven’t heard before too.
  2. Your battery fluid level is low, this can be seen under the hood; typically your battery case will have a translucent section that allows you to see how much fluid is in your battery currently.
  3. Excessive heat can cause your batter casing to swell, this is usually a sign of decreased battery life.
  4. You’ve had the battery for more than three years. Although they typically last much longer than that, it is good practice to keep an eye on your battery around this time frame.

Selecting a New Battery

It’s important to keep in mind the following guidelines when selecting a new battery:

  1. Does it meet or exceed the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating recommended in your vehicle owner’s manual?
  2. Will it be held down properly in the battery tray? When a battery fits properly there is less chance of damage.
  3. Does it offer the largest possible capacity if you drive in the extreme cold? A battery will lose about 40% of its cranking power in the drop from 27ºC to -18ºC, even if it’s fully charged.
  4. Does it have a sufficient Reserve Capacity (RC), which indicates how long accessories can run while leaving enough power to start the engine?

It’s important to note that due to the various accessories and internal systems that a new car has in comparison to an older one, they’re typically harder on your battery.
